Writing Love Poetry

September 1, 2012 By Melissa Leave a Comment

Loving For Keeps marriage cartoon – how to save a relationship - write a poem or songThe essence of homemade love poetry oozes specialness. It’s like having a song written just for you. Fortunately, you don’t have to write the music, only the lyrics to turn your partner on, and you don’t even have to be good at it, so long as it’s heartfelt. If you’re asking, “How to save my relationship?” writing poetry is an art form to try.

My husband and I wanted to share some excerpts from a couple of our poems. Not because they are great poetry, but to encourage you to compose your own. Writing poetry will help you cultivate the know how to save a relationship – the romantic part.

Take the following poems, or any others that you resonate with, and tweak them in ways that make them your own. Don’t worry about plagiarizing.Your creations are not for publication; they’re destined for something greater — to deepen your romantic life. Poetry writing helps you reflect on how to save your relationship by singing its praises and appreciating its essence.

Two Love Poems to Chris

Music of Love

…The sounds of my husband – my lover, my friend—
this triptych are what I long for.
His laugh, his pitch, his cadence,
His mezzo forte, piano, and fortissimo –
This heartbeat sets the rhythm of my day and night
I yearn for him to take me to bed,
scooping me up with his music of love.

I Love You Anyway

In the middle of the night,
I sit down and fall into the toilet,
a toilet that you’ve cleaned once in thirty years.
I reach for the toilet paper where there was some.

We disagree on the care of these basics,
you and I,
But I love you anyway.

Our battleground is the toilet seat,
Day after day.
You’d think that it wouldn’t matter after all these years –
but it does,
and it doesn’t,
because I love you anyway.

Two Love Poems to Melissa
by Christopher W. Baker

My Private Joan of Arc

My love strides forth
into the morning sun,
gleaming like a hero
in full armor,
hand upraised in courage,
dashing away the darkness
with but a wave
of her sword,
a Joan of Arc
to my heart,
awakening the roar
of its soldiers in response,
a tidal surge of passion
sweeping like a mighty army
past my resistance to be loved.

How Can I Resist?

…My eyes devour
your every morsel,
so exquisitely arranged
by the master chef.

But I can resist no longer.

A slice of the tongue here,
a nibble here, and there
a rapid series of increasing bites
until in ravenous gluttony
I snatch and gulp and gorge
on every mouthful
consuming all.

It’s only at the end I pause,
while dabbing each remaining crumb,
and understand that with this feast
my love has barely just begun.

Follow the marriage cartoon and resist the temptation to procrastinate!
You may think that you’re not a poet, but why not try expressing your love for your partner by writing a poem? Make it deep and sensual or light and comic. It only takes a few moments, yet poems have an enduring quality.
